The Fingers of the Unknown

They used to say it about cats,
just a massive collection of switches:
all those if-thens-on-offs.
Now science has arrived at
the deep past, at the protists,
before-before, at the beginning.

Those tiny hair legs
wired without wires
to invisible sensors
made by chemistry.

They got rid of wanting.
Thought never did like wanting,
so inconvenient, so against
logic, so un-chemo-mechanical,
so magic.
