The Takeaway

It's not that the universe is kind,
but there are fuses
in the universe that protect it.
The universe
rejects the incompatible.
Anything logically impossible will be erased.
Rest easy students
God has pledged
to discontinue miracles.

The Luncheon

When the small man
meets the big man weakness
magnifies, the screen shows
every eye-squint, soft
floppy lip, every teary
memory, feeling itself
shunt downward, years,
regrets, giving all away,
valueless. Death comes
more quickly as treasures
lose their gloss.
Poetry is about failure
ooh the love of regret
the soft end of sleep
it's the least
valuable of arts,
the most futile
form of prayer.

The Food Court

Silence now,
as no sound presses my ear,
no heat of voices,
no fingerprints of biology:
sense and dreams.
So, the speech comes
harshly real,
a thing that must be registered.
When I see the strangers talking
her arm reaching out
for his, a familiar anchor.
I can't watch them hard.
It's just that the thing of speech
draws me, the words. the things of words,
spittums of life.

The Lights Go Out

 I come up
 to the podium
 with something to say.
 Nobody believes it.
 I  bank my stories,
 Explode them on their heads.
 I am dangerous.
 And they wait
 expecting to cheer.

New Years Gathering Entertainment

Having munched on cupcakes
Alexandra twists the handles
of the words looking
for the edges of a joke,
knock knock and
road-crossed chickens.
Trying this and that
like toying her way
through a fugue.
She gets to know us.
We watch her little hands.
