On Watching Couples in a Restaurant

He could sit anywhere alone
and let thoughts slip and slide;
anywhere could sit face to face
in silence with someone
he's supposed to love;
could let laws of certainty and manner
decide what to say;
could glance across any table
without piercing the water;
could speak without ripples, anywhere;
could float in the sea anywhere,
watching for storms without really caring.
