A Rational Moment

I was calm when I summarized it. I thought I might cry out; but it was a span of calm when I realized it: my life has been just a life. The favored spirits, the stairway to the future, the kindly memories and awe were never in the world or in the future. I was calm, it was the calm of watching the present end. My life has been just a life. The sparkles died on the wand.
