An Everyday Miracle

Why would the simple hermit crab
climb the stick carelessly left
in the warm, moist and safe tank
to escape into this other world
of death and adventure?
Such creatures, born into
emptiness, bury themselves
deep in moist sand and silence.
Hiding in the far-away dust,
the children found it
not even knowing it was gone.
