Bird Calls in Spring

When the birds come back
just following their
beady little hearts
they fly in laughter,
deep in the breezes.

The geese, with their
grandeur and their order
cry out Yee-hah Yee-hah
--a blind wild abandon--
each answering the enthusiasm
of the others.

The gulls say yipee, stretch
their elbowy wings and wriggle their hips,
dancing and gripping the thigh of the air.
The smaller birds, buried in the trees
pee pee with joy. Seriousness is life,
and joy is serious.
