taken from a nearby hill
show the people in the camps
gathered at the edge of the light

with their backs to the twinkling campfires
murmering, a thousand hushes
away from the living and waiting,
in awe of the encroaching wave
of immersion with the stars,

as if they were watching an odd
accident; but it was only
the shadow of the Earth from which
they could not turn.
